Armed Forces Flag Day 2020: Honouring our soldiers!

On this day, it is our responsibility to honour all military personnel and especially those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of fire. The day has been observed since August 28, 1949.

On December 7th every year, we remember and appreciate the selfless services of all soldiers, airmen and sailors of India. It was on August 28, 1949, that the Indian Government had set up a committee chaired by then Defence Minister to observe this day as the Armed Forces Flag Day. The are three main crucial objectives – Rehabilitation of battle casualties, to ensure the well being of the families of active military personnel and the resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen.

To celebrate the occasion, the Indian tri-services – Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force organize a variety of events comprising of carnivals, dramas and entertainment shows. The Indian public is also requested to donate in-kind towards the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF). To mark the occasion, small flags in red, deep and light blue colours are distributed in public to encourage and create awareness among the general public to make donations. There are also various funds such as – Amalgamated special fund for war bereaved, Flag Day Fund, St Dunstan’s (India) and Kendriya Sainik Board Fund and Indian Gorkha Ex-Servicemen’s Welfare Fund.
