This news is a bit disappointing for legislators who sit in the Assembly without going to jail for having committed crimes. The Telangana HC directed three courts to complete trial of cases pending against former and current legislators on a daily basis. The decision comes down hard on those criminal politicians who show up as people’s representatives.
Special courts will also be set up to hear cases against corrupt officials of the CBI and ACB, MLAs and MPs on a fast track basis.
Delaying tactics…
Politicians are resorting to delay tactics in order to evade trial, leading to several cases piling up against several MPs and MLAs. Most of the politicians who have a criminal background use their clout to influence voters and win elections. Especially, in the case of political leaders from the ruling party whose cases go ‘pending’ for years. Now, the Supreme Court has ordered that cases involving legislators, former and current, be tried on priority basis.
Criminal cases are the real issue…
Most of the political leaders face several issues in their public life, as the nexus of crime and politics are apparent. Supreme Court has also stated that criminal cases against public representatives is bad for the constitutional framework, adding that people in powerful positions do influence judgements and that several NGOs in the past approached the courts for justice.
Expedite cases immediately…
The NDA government announced that it would take steps to expedite the trial of criminal public figures and that PM Modi is also looking into the issue very seriously. With the Supreme Court now directing all High Courts to hasten the process of hearing, hearts of political leaders will definitely skip a beat.
