The Congress high command in its CWC meeting held on Friday decided that it would pick its new chief by June 21st. In the meet, the key leaders made up their mind to confirm the candidate by the said date. From this, it is clearly evident as to how worried the Congress party is when it comes to choosing a non-Gandhi member as the party chief.
The AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal addressing a presser at the Congress Headquarters said that the Congress President would be definitely be picked by June. An internal election will be held after the Assembly by-polls in five states and then an elected chief would be picked. The CWC meet chaired by Sonia Gandhi went on for three and a half hours and all the members approved the decision to have an elected president.
On the other hand, the Central Election Authority of the Congress had proposed to hold the internal polls on May 29. It is known that Rahul Gandhi has been reluctant to take up the post following the dismal performance of the Congress and this led Sonia Gandhi to handle the responsibility for the time being.
