The Editor’s Guild of India reacting to Arnab Goswami’s arrest by the Mumbai Police expressed shock and condemned the police action. The Editor of Republic TV was detained by a dozen police personnel who entered the former’s residence for reportedly having abetted to a 2018 suicide case. Arnab claimed that he was physically assaulted and manhandled while being pushed into a police van.
According to Republic TV, the Executive editor Niranjan Narayanswamy and senior associate editor Sanjay Pathak were stopped from entering Arnab’s residence. While, 40-50 Police personnel, some of them armed, arrived in eight vehicles at the editor’s residence.
“Shocked to learn about the arrest of Arnab Goswami in the early hours of Wednesday. We condemn the sudden arrest and find it extremely distressing. The Guild calls upon the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to ensure that Goswami is treated fairly and state power is not used against critical reporting by the media,” the Editors Guild of India said. The press statement was released by President Seema Mustafa, General Secretary Sanjay Kapoor and Treasurer Anant Nath.
