A new controversy has broken out amongst the Greater Hyderabad standing committee members. Strong criticism is also being heard against the functioning of the standing committee. While the people are questioning their decision, the members are justifying by stating that they want the old practice to continue. The governing council has cancelled the proposal to avoid controversy as the tenure of the members ends in two months.
The standing committee which met two days back has put forward 18 issues on the table. The proposals include increasing revenue, acquiring of properties for road widening, approval of the draft budget and 4G sims to officials. The meeting gave approval to all the proposals as decided earlier after serious discussions. However, it was kept aside from four controversial issues. The proposals include the distribution of new iPhone models for members. There is a discussion going on that there is a practice in the GHMC to give an electronic gadget. The committee cancelled the proposals following a huge outrage.
A few corporators lost the elections held recently. The members feel that they may not get an iPhone if they don’t get it now. However, the opposition members pointed out that the standing committee members did not visit the people when they were in distress during the floods. The opposition parties are criticizing the committee for demanding a phone which costs Rs 1 lakh. There is a possibility of one more meeting of the standing committee before the term ends. It has to be seen whether the members would withdraw their demand or get the latest iPhone.
