The Telangana Rashtra Samithi is looking for potential candidates to contest in the MLC polls being held for the Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda-Khammam-Warangal Graduate constituencies in March 2021. Though the party high command has finalized a few names, the final decision is yet to be taken. Candidates with social integration skills, popularity to attract voters are being considered. In this context, the name of Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan is predominantly heard.
Rammohan hails from Warangal. He has a strong connection with Hyderabad having completed his education from the city. TRS party leaders opine that the Mayor’s proactive participation during the Telangana agitation and his popularity amongst the city youth, make him a good pick as the MLC candidate. As a trusted aide of CM KCR his name is expected to be in the final list.
Though Rammohan’s fine with Hyderabad, the challenge ahead is how he’ll make an impact in Ranga Reddy and Mahabubnagar districts, especially overcoming social class issues as the former hails from a BC community. Now, most of the TRS MLAs in the joint Mahabubnagar district belonging to the Reddy community need to back Rammohan’s candidacy, if the latter needs to win.
Rammohan isn’t willing?
Close aides reveal that Rammohan is reluctant to contest in the MLC election, as it is not his place of birth nor is he acquainted with people’s mentality, apart from the extensive experience of touring the districts. It will be interesting to see if Rammohan will contest or not, as a failure in the polls could spell an end to his political career.
