Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s master stroke of abolishing Village Revenue Officers (VRO) system, received unexpected support from the people. As against the expectations of opposition parties, people are elated over the dumping of the system and expressing their joy with ‘Palabhishekam’ to KCR portraits and bursting crackers. It is the turn of the opposition parties to be surprised at the hatred people have towards the VROs. These parties are in a bind on how to respond to the government’s decision. If they oppose the abolition, they fear they will become unpopular with the people.
Pressure on Jagan
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is considered a protégé of KCR. Now the people of Andhra Pradesh are also looking to Jagan to follow his mentor in the issue of abolition of VRO system. The Chief Minister is already unhappy with the corruption and irregularities in the revenue system in the state. There are many instances of people facing problems from the corrupt VROs and other revenue officials. In this backdrop, people are asking the Chief Minister to follow KCR in doing away with the VROs in AP too. People are urging him to begin his anti-corruption drive by cleansing the most-hated revenue machinery to prove his sincerity.
