According to the latest information, the results of the Greater elections are almost certain. However, a sense of excitement still prevails. From the start, there has been an intense competition among only three parties – the TRS, BJP and MIM. Sadly, Congress has limited itself to a single digit.
Though the TRS might lose seats when compared to the previous elections, it still remains the single largest party, while the MIM continues to stay strong in its bastion, Old City. But BJP’s performance in these elections has been unprecedented, and a massive improvement from the four seats it won in 2016. In some divisions, a neck to neck competition is on between the TRS and the BJP. At one stage, the BJP gave a strong competition even to MIM in its bastion of Old City. On the other hand, the BJP continues its lead in Goshamahal constituency and the trends indicate so. As the number battle goes on, the election commission authorities have so far announced the names of those candidates who won in 113 divisions.
As of now, TRS in 44, BJP in 28, MIM in 39 and the Congress has won in two divisions. At the same time, the TRS is leading in 29 and the BJP in 11 divisions. Though the ruling party lost some seats when compared to 2016 elections, they have enough majority needed to claim the mayoral post. Around 101 seats are needed for a party to claim the mayor post.
In these GHMC elections 2020, there are a total of 150 wards. Along with this, in the city limits, there are 52 ex-officio votes. If both are combined the total is 202 seats. Hence, in order to win the Mayor post, the magic figure needed is 101 seats. Now, the TRS has the highest number of ex-officio votes with 32 of them in its account, which is an added advantage for the ruling party. Also, the TRS in alliance with the MIM can claim the mayor post. Well, it’s just a matter of hours before the final results will be out.
