Racket to boost TV ratings, ad revenue busted by Mumbai Police

Mumbai Police bust racket behind TRP manipulation and ad revenue. Channels fraudulently boost TV viewership numbers.

To withstand intense competition, certain TV channels are resorting to fraudulent means. Mumbai Police have busted a racket working behind the fake TRP scam.

Republic TV hits back over allegations…

Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh in a press conference held on Thursday revealed several issues regarding the fake TRP fraud. However, Republic TV which has been named by the top cop has denied the allegations. Republic’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami went all guns blazing against the Mumbai Police Commissioner stating that the allegations were totally false and that they were being targeted for their relentless pursuit over the Sushant Singh Rajput case.

He claimed that BARC has not named Republic TV in any of the complaints and that a defamation notice will be filed against Param Bir Singh, besides demanding an apology from the top official.

Huge amounts of money through manipulation

Police claim that fraudulent TRPs allowed the channels to increase their viewership and also attract ad revenue. Also, families in slums and illiterate people were paid money and meters affixed such that they watch certain English channels on a monthly basis. Two TV channels including a national TV channel resorted to this fraud, the Mumbai Police Commissioner stated, adding that some former employees of BARC too were behind the racket.
