Hyderabad Rains

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in both the Telugu states under the influence of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, which moved into Telangana after covering Andhra Pradesh. According to the IMD, a yellow alert has been issued in the city. In AP’s Narsipatnam, a 60-year old woman identified as Uma Maheshwari died as the car she was travelling washed away while crossing the flooded Donga Gedda stream. The lady accompanied by her son, daughter-in-law and a driver were on their way to Tirupati. Heavy rains also pounded East and West Godavari, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and Krishna districts.

In Telangana, nine people, including a two-month-old infant were killed after a compound wall collapsed due to the incessant rains. Around fourteen districts in the state have been affected by the torrential rains, with vehicles stuck on the flooded roads causing long serpentine traffic queues.

IMD warns of more rains

The IMD has warned of thunderstorms and heavy rains in the next 48 hours in Telangana. Meanwhile, rescue efforts are on with nineteen disaster relief teams having been deployed in the city and boat used to rescue stranded residents in Hyderabad. Last night, alarming rise in water levels led to authorities open the floodgates of the Himayat Sagar dam that supplies water to Hyderabad. The rainfall is expected to continue for the next 24 hours in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh.
