Why an affidavit was sought from YS Jagan by the CJI?

It is known that CJI SA Bobde sought for a written statement from the AP CM over the allegations made by the latter against Judge NV Ramana. It is learnt that the CJI has taken the issue seriously.

AP CM YS Jagan needs to submit an affidavit to the Chief Justice of India SA Bobde with regards to the allegations made against a sitting member of the higher judiciary. It is known that AP CM wrote a letter to the CJI stating that Judge NV Ramana had cooperated with the high court judges and TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu to topple the government. According to close sources, the CJI in order to initiate an enquiry regarding the same needs a written approval rather than a mere letter hence has sought for an affidavit from the AP CM.

Now, YS Jagan also needs to provide the necessary record to prove his allegations and if they are proved, it would hinder Judge NV Ramana from being appointed as the next CJI, which is exactly what the former intends.

On the other hand, by submitting an affidavit the issue will be considered seriously by the CJI and in case the AP CM is unable to substantiate his claims against the sitting member of the Supreme Court then he would have to face contempt of court, which is much serious offence in nature. Also, CJI SA Bobde who has initiated an enquiry into the matter has asked for an explanation from JK Maheshwari, the outgoing AP High Court Judge and NV Ramana.
