The state government initiated fixing meters to agricultural pump sets provided under the YSR Free Power scheme. The scheme was free during the previous government. However, the YCP government which promised to continue the scheme is now fixing electricity meters. Meanwhile, the government announced to implement a cash transfer scheme and that the money pertaining to the bills of the agricultural pump sets would be deposited into their bank accounts. Though the opposition parties are demanding the government not to fix motors, the government is going ahead with its plans. It is planning to implement this from next April.<\/p>\n

There are 26,405 borewells in Srikakulam district and meters are fixed for free for the 25,288 pump sets. The authorities are planning to fix smart meters by the end of this month. Apart from this, the connections would also be regularized. There are more agriculture connections in Ranasthalam, Laveru, Echerla, G Sigadam, Ponduru mandals. There are fewer connections in Sitampet mandal. Criticism is that when the government has assured free power, what was the need for fixing the meters by spending crores of rupees.<\/p>\n

The government talks of providing money into the bank accounts of the farmers in advance but how would the government know about the consumption of power by the farmers? The government states that they want to get clarity on the usage of free power, but are unable to guarantee whether the free power will be continued or not. The government also states that it would appoint committees right from village level to mandal level to solve the problems but the technical experts say that this is not possible.
