The Home Ministry has rejected the petitions filed by Nirav Modi, who is absconding on the grounds that Covid was mentally ill and mentally ill. At the same time, it gave him a chance. He was given 14 days to appeal against the Home Ministry’s decision in the High Court there. Complaints were received about the non-payment of loans. There have also been allegations that loans have been misappropriated and diverted to Hong Kong and Dubai banks. The CBI and ED registered a case against Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and others on January 31, 2018. However, he fled India on January 18. The CBI had filed a charge sheet on May 14 naming 25 people as accused in the case and in December 2019, the CBI filed a second charge sheet in the court. Nirav Modi, who fled abroad, was arrested in London in 2019 following the issuance of an Interpol red corner notice.

Nirav Modi in the UK

Attempts to escape

India demands the extradition of Nirav Modi in London as part of an extradition treaty. Later, the Covid issue was brought to the fore, allegations of human rights violations in India, mental health was not good, and prison facilities were another reason. In this context, the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on February 25 made key remarks on Nirav Modi’s petition. The bail petition was filed on the ground that there was no evidence that the cases registered against Nirav could not be investigated impartially in India. At the same time, the CBI had to give an assurance in court on behalf of the EDs. Nirav said Modi would be transferred from Wandsworth Jail to Barrack No. 12 in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai and had to report on the jail arrangements.
