They stood up against the dominant male politicians and made their voice heard. They were highly visible and vocal. However, they are not seen or heard anymore. Like all political leaders, they too changed parties but have no luck.

Former Union ministers Daggubati Purandeswari, Panabaka Lakshmi, former MPs Killi Kruparani, Butta Renuka, Kothapalli Geetha, minister in combined state DK Aruna… all of them are veteran leaders, but have gone into a kind of political oblivion now.

Purandeswari, daughter of TDP founder and former chief minister NT Rama Rao, joined the Congress and worked as a Union minister. It is ironic that her father founded Telugu Desam party to fight against Congress which blessed his daughter with plump portfolios. This created a sensation not only in NTR’s family, but also in the entire state. After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and rout of Congress, she joined BJP. She was a dominant leader in the party for some time and was also considered for the post of AP state unit president, but her hopes were dashed. She has been relegated to obscurity in the party domain. Except putting in an appearance on one or two party programmes, she has almost disappeared from the political scene these days.

The fate of another former Central Minister Panabaka Lakhsmi is similar. Once she was an influential woman leader in Congress. Her husband, who was a senior officer in railways, made a name as a Congress leader with considerable clout during the UPA rule. Both of them are not seen anywhere.

Killi, Butta: No return

Killi Kruparani, who was elected to Lok Sabha from Srikakulam, lost the seat like her Congress colleagues after the bifurcation. Just before the 2019 elections, she joined YSRCP expecting Srikakulam Lok Sabha seat, but could not get it. Since the elections, there has been no news of her. It is learnt that she hoped for nominated post but that too has eluded her.

Butta Renuka who belongs to Rayalaseema was elected to Lok Sabha from Kurnool seat in 2014 elections. She joined TDP in the middle of her term. Sensing that she will not get party ticket in 2019, she returned to YSRCP just before the elections. But the YSRCP too denied her the ticket. She has become inactive in politics after the elections.

DK Aruna, a firebrand leader in Telangana, was a minister in the undivided Andhra Pradesh. After bifurcation, she continued in Congress for some time before shifting to BJP. She expected reins of the Telangana BJP, but the party high command refused the post to her. Following this, Aruna is not seen much in party programmes. It is really a paradox in politics for women leaders who once ruled the roost in state politics to fade into political oblivion so soon.

Once they ruled the politics in united Andhra Pradesh.
