A director’s skill can be catapulted to the next level if he casts good performers for the roles he has written for his movies. Director Sachy proved it with his super hit Malayalam film ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’. It is one of the most popular movies in Amazon Prime now and is ready to be remade in Telugu by ‘Sithara Entertainments’.
Plot
Koshi Kurien is travelling to his own village in his car driven by the driver while. The car is stopped at a Police check post and cops find liquor bottles in the car. Even though Koshy explains to them that he got them in military quota as he was an ex-havaldar, Police arrests him. SI Ayyappan Nair books cases on him and eventually comes to know that Koshy is connected to the who’s who in politics and police department. Koshy retaliates by framing Ayyappan in a case and gets him dismissed from the department. This begins an ego clash between Ayyappan and Koshy and rest of the story deals with whether they became friends or not at the end.
Analysis
Prithviraj Sukumaran and Biju Menon are two talented stars who have huge stardom in Kerala. Even though director Sachy could have planned a mass entertainer on them, he chose an entirely different route by going for an ego filled thriller. His scenes elevated the performances of both the stars and he became successful in sustaining the thrill factor until the climax. ‘Ayyapanum Koshiyum’ became a blockbuster in Malayalam. Unfortunately, Sachy’s death after the movie released came as a shock for his fans and audiences.
Highlights
Prithviraj Sukumaran portrayed Koshy’s character with wit and innocence mixed with his ‘military’ pride. Biju Menon as ‘Ayyappan Nair’ played a powerful role with subtlety and aggression when needed. The fights are conceived in an extraordinary way. While Gowri Nanda and Anil Nedugamand played important roles, veteran film director Ranjith played Prithviraj’s father’s role.
