Movie Review: ‘Porinju Mariyam Jose’

Malayalam films are entertaining OTT buffs lately. Thanks to the lockdown, Mollywood films are becoming the numero uno choice for film lovers. They are known for their unique content and realistic portrayal of characters. Even mass films in Malayalam also contain versatility and one such film that is becoming sensational now is ‘Porinju Mariyam Jose’. It is directed by veteran director Joshiy.

Plot

Porinju, Jose and Mariyam are best friends from childhood. Mariyam and Porinju start loving each other. Porinju is a butcher and also works as a henchman for a powerful man named Lype Muthalali. Lype’s grandson Prince misbehaves with Mariyam during a procession. Jose confronts and beats Prince. Prince avenges Jose by killing him. Knowing this, Porinju kills Prince which makes Lype to backstab Porinju. Finally, Mariyam becomes alone after losing both her lover and best friend.

Analysis

‘Porinju Mariyam Jose’ portrays the rustic reality we find in the villages in an excellent manner. Director Joshiy showcased the conspiracies and revenge proceedings in a gripping manner. He also became successful in elevating the emotions of friendship, love and sacrifice. His characters and screenplay stand as major highlights of the film. Joju George as ‘Porinju’, Chemban Vinod as ‘Jose’ and Nyla Usha as ‘Mariyam’ did a wonderful job. Vijaya Raghavan as ‘Lype Muthalali’ has also done justice for the role.

Highlights

Veteran director Joshiy is known for his prowess in conceiving action films. This is his comeback film and he proves his mettle once again. The entry scene of ‘Porinju’ is shot excellently and the scene in which ‘Jose’ dies oozes emotion. Climax is another highlight as it shows that criminals too have ethics.
