Analysis

Revenge drama is an age old genre. All the stars have acted in multiple films in this genre. Director Ajai Vasudev ushered new breath into this genre by plotting it around a new point. This film showcases the reality of mafia in the film industry and how producers trouble financiers. Casting Mammootty in the central character ‘Boss’ is the major highlight of this film. While Kalabhavan Shajohn played ‘Prathap Varma’ with ease, Siddique delivers a decent performance in the Commissioner’s role. Senior Tamil actor Rajkiran and Meena played other important characters.

Highlights

Mammootty’s performance is the biggest highlight of ‘Shylock’. The scene in which he teaches a hard-hitting lesson to the producers who default loans to the financiers is interesting. Flashback episode with Rajkiran has high emotional content. Movies of similar kind are familiar to Tollywood, but new to Malayalam. That is the reason it stood as a major hit in Mollywood.
