Chinese are known for their love towards historic movies with heavy action dose. Baahubali’s stupendous success in oriental market stands as a witness for this fact. COVID-19 pandemic shook the foundations of all film industries across the globe. The first big budgeted flick released after the pandemic was Christopher Nolan’s ‘TENET’. It was released in August and collected a meager $250 million at the box office. ‘TENET’ needs another $500 million to reach its breakeven, forget profits.
Recently a Chinese film titled ‘The Eight Hundred’ became the first successful film after the pandemic as it amassed $434 million within one month of its release. The movie is based on the heroics of Nationalist Chinese troops countering Japanese forces during their invasion of Shanghai in 1937. The Eight Hundred is filmmaking on a different level altogether. It has earned the distinction of being the first Chinese production to be shot completely with digital IMAX cameras. Guan Hu has done a commendable job to demonstrate a rear-guard action by the Chinese Nationalist Army to guard an important warehouse from the invading Japanese troops.
‘The Eight Hundred’ is becoming the world’s top box office hit this year, eclipsing Hollywood blockbusters. This is definitely hope at the end of the tunnel for the famished movie industries.
