The death toll from the massive quake which hit Turkey has risen to 100 on Tuesday, as per data released by AFAD. As per media reports, search and rescue are still on for individuals trapped in the rubble. Around 147 people have been hospitalized till now. However, the region witnessed 1,464 aftershocks, including 44 that were above four in magnitude. This led to people in Izmir spend their fourth night in makeshift tents.
Turkey is prone to earthquakes as it is located on several fault lines. It is known that over 500 people were killed in a 2011 quake in the city of Van, while another this year in January had killed 41 people in Elazig province. According to AFAD, around 3500 tents and 13000 beds have been set up as temporary shelters, and 8000 personnel and 25 rescue dogs were deployed for rescue operations.
