Education plays a prominent role in the development of a country. The main reason for the development in countries like America, England, Germany, Russia, Italy, France, Japan and China is its 100 percent literacy rate. In this perspective, what are the steps being taken up by the Telangana government? When these questions are put to intellectuals, the reply comes in the form of anger. The truth is that Telangana is the only state which allocates a lesser budget in education among the states in South India. The standard of Telangana in primary education is such that it is at 19th place.
Compared to the past, it can be said that the Telangana budget has increased. However, the analysts say that the allotment to the education sector is less. Previously, in undivided Andhra Pradesh, the education sector got 10 percent of the total budget. In Telangana, the budget has decreased every year and in 2020-21 the budget was just 6 percent. The experts say that the sector should be allocated 20 percent of the budget. The department sought a budget of Rs 18,000 Crore during 2020-21 but the government allocated Rs 12,000 Crore and 85 to 90 percent money was spent on salaries resulting in the schools suffering from problems.
The schools are in such a condition that the walls, rooftops are ready to collapse. The students are made to study under the sun. At some places there are no pucca houses and the question asked is where and how students would study.
Recently, the government renovated a collapsed school building which was constructed in 1866 at Sultan Bazar. There was no untoward incident as the schools were closed otherwise there used to be 400 students in the schools. This is the school in which former President Zakir Hussain, former Chief Minister T Anjaiah, Former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s son PV Rangarao and other public representatives studied in the school. The Indian National Trust for Art and Culture (INTAC) said that no one bothered to take care even after there was a request for repairs during last November. When the situation of school in which former President and chief ministers had studied, is such there is no need to talk about others.
There are 26,050 government schools in Telangana, of which 18,230 are primary, 3,179 are upper primary and 4,641 are high schools. There are 24 lakh students and 1,41,343 are teachers. Currently, there are 32,000 teachers, 5,000 craft and art teachers and 4,000 computer teacher posts are vacant in government schools. Is it ridiculous to show this school to say that the school, which was renovated with Rs 3 Crore in collaboration with giving Telangana Charitable institute, was better than corporate schools?
