Tollywood is not an industry which is known for experimental Cinema. All our heroes are programmed to look young and handsome even in 60s. Most of them won’t opt for characters that look rustic and realistic due to the constraints. Some of the films which tried these kinds of nuances failed miserably in the past. Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao acted in a handicapped role in ‘Kalasivunte Kaladu Sukham’ and scored a hit due to the strength in the story. His other experiment ‘Chiranjeevulu’ showcased him in a blind role and was rejected by the audiences as they were unable to accept NTR in that character.
These kind of films portraying the leading stars in differently abled roles stopped after ‘Chiranjeevulu’ until Kamal Hassan came up with ‘Amavasya Chandrudu’. Kamal is an actor who broke the image barriers and it is a fact that there is hardly any other star like him in the nation. Even star heroines like Jayaprada, Jayasudha, Suhasini and Sridevi excelled in physically challenged characters in the past.
As the newer generation is inclined towards realistic Cinema, now people are ready to watch their favourite stars playing differently abled characters. ‘Raja the Great’ by Ravi Teja scored a mega hit and revived people’s interest to see their stars in different characters. Young hero Sharwanand who is known for playing performance-oriented roles is now on a signing spree. He is currently busy with ‘Sreekaram’ and announced another film with ‘RX100’ fame Ajay Bhupathi named ‘Mahasamudram’. He is in talks with Raju Sundaram who is going to debut as a director. After that, Sharwa will be doing another film with a newbie named Prakash. He is playing the character of a blind man in it.
Nithin who is surfing the success tide with ‘Bheeshma’ is now acting in the remake of a Hindi film named ‘Andhadhun’. In this movie, hero who acts as a blind guy in the beginning turns blind for real in the climax due to interesting circumstances. Shriya Saran is playing the role of antagonist which was played by Tabu in the original.
Anushka played the role of a born deaf and dumb painter in her upcoming film ‘Nishabdham’. It is all set to release on OTT. Its story revolves around a woman who faces troubles after witnessing a murder. Madhavan is playing the male lead in this Hemanth Madhukar film. Samantha Akkineni is getting ready to act in a deaf and dumb role shortly. Her film is made as a trilingual under the direction of Ashwin Saravan. Vijay Sethupathi is playing an important character in this upcoming film.
