The Andhra Pradesh government had to face a backlash from the High Court on Tuesday, in connection with the panchayat elections which are to be held in February next year. The High Court in its hearing rejected the plea filed by the YSRCP Government against conducting the upcoming elections citing Coronavirus fears and that around six thousand people had lost their lives. However, the Court dismissed the plea saying that the State Election Commission need to file a counterclaim and adjourned the case to the December 14th.
It is known that Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, the State Election Commissioner had announced to hold the local body in Andhra Pradesh in February 2021. This didn’t go down well with the AP Government, thereby leaving the state administration and the SEC at loggerheads against each other. This led the AP Government to knock the doors of the High Court and file a plea against the Election Commission in a bid to stop the election process. The plea on behalf of the AP Government was filed by Gopal Krishna Dwivedi, the Panchayati Raj Chief Secretary. In its plea, the state government claimed that the decision taken by the State Election Commission was totally unanimous without having consulted the former and that it was in violation of the Supreme Court orders.
