Sundarlal Bahuguna, the leader of the Chipko movement is no more. He had a corona infection a few days ago. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment. He breathed his last while receiving treatment in AIIMS, Rishikesh on Friday. He fought for the protection of forests during the non-violent Chipko movement of 1973. Large-scale movements, especially in deforestation, were made. Raised awareness from young children to adults and advocated for environmental protection. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his death. He said no one could fill the deficit he lacked. “For five decades, we have been campaigning on environmental issues and against deforestation and working tirelessly for the protection of endangered flora, fauna and birds,” said Telangana CM KCR.
Passing away of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji is a monumental loss for our nation. He manifested our centuries old ethos of living in harmony with nature. His simplicity and spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and many admirers. Om Shanti.
