Somu Veerraju was appointed as the party’s president in a bid to strengthen the BJP in Andhra Pradesh and become an effective opposition to YSRCP led State Government. BJP preferred Somu Veerraju to Kanna Lakshmi Narayana even though the latter strongly opposed Jagan’s policies. Veerraju started his political journey in BJP as an ordinary worker and the Central Party has placed much confidence in him. He is considered to be a staunch loyalist to the party and his resume is filled with many incidents. He even opposed Chandrababu Naidu many a time over policy matters when he was the chief minister. But his calm demeanor towards the YSRCP policies has now become the talk of the town in political circles.
Even though BJP’s National General Secretary condemned the three capitals strategy during Veerraju’s swearing ceremony by quoting the example of single capital for Uttar Pradesh, the latter kept quiet other than uttering usual jargon. He never extended his support publicly to the Amaravati farmers and never questioned the State Government’s failure in controlling the spread of pandemic. His silence has now started to irk BJP workers and they are confused about why he was made the president in the first place.
Veerrarju met Janasena Chief Pawan Kalyan after his swearing ceremony and their decision to organize protests together never materialized. Even Janasena is not in a position to believe him now and they are simply waiting for BJP leadership to do something about this situation. BJP is hoping to gather the support of numerically stronger Kapu community as Veerraju belongs to that community, but there are several doubts in his ability to achieve their goals. Anyway, time is the only deciding factor and let’s see how Somu Veerraju fares in the future.
