Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been elected the chairman of Shree Somnath Trust. Till date, PM Modi had only been serving as a member of the board of trustees. However, on Monday the board of trustees in a virtual meeting unanimously chose PM Modi as the chairman of the Sree Somnath Trust (SST). The temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat is considered as the first of the twelve jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva.
After former Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai, Narendra Modi is the second Prime Minister to be elected the chairman of the Shree Somnath Trust that manages the world-famous Somnath Temple. PM Modi has been elected as the eighth chairman of the prestigious Shree Somnath Trust.
Following the demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel in October 2020, the post of chairman had been lying vacant. For almost 16 years (2004-2020) Keshubhai Patel had served as the chairman of the Shree Somnath Trust.
Currently, the member of the board of trustees includes Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP leader LK Advani, Gujarat based scholar JD Parmar and businessman Harshavardhan Neotia. It was Amit Shah who proposed the name of PM Modi for the post of SST chairman, to which all members unanimously agreed.
