Both leaders are known for doing whatever they like. They want to have supremacy over all 500 MPs and hence change the rules, or break them to be in power. They make leaders change the party irrespective of the party’s principles and strengthen themselves. Yes! We are talking about Indira Gandhi and Narendra Modi, they both share some similarities.
Both are same but the treatment is different and mode of operation is also different. Both are monarchic in nature and think in the same direction. While Indira Gandhi had fewer weapons and more power, Narendra Modi with more weapons, naturally got power.
This generation questions what exactly is an emergency? To put it in simple terms – emergency means you should not ask nor talk. Do whatever is told to you and if you question about your right, you will be imprisoned. Even the courts are helpless. Don’t say that the situation is the same right now. There is a difference between the past and present. Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency on June 25, 1975, and it was in force till March 21, 1977, for around 21 months. She imposed an emergency because had the court orders were implemented against her, she would have to leave her post. To avoid leaving the post, she brought an emergency. Indira who became Prime Minister after Nehru showed the Congress leaders her style. She would only decide and ensured that there were no objections and the remaining ministers became dummies.
The nationalization of banks and the abolition of royalties changed the economy. There was also a good plan behind the nationalization of banks. At that time entrepreneurs were not in a position to invest heavily. Indira Gandhi nationalized the banks and arranged for the money of the people into the banks to be lent to them. Because of this, the country could be industrialised. The Tata and Birla clans flourished as well. But how many people know the fact that they all grew up with their own money? And Indira Gandhi raised her own image. India’s war with Pakistan to liberate Bangladesh also boosted Indira’s image. This led to a landslide victory in 1971. After that, in case of any obstruction in the courts, it became common to amend the constitution immediately. Thus, the courts were also dominated by Indira.
By the year 1974, dissatisfaction among the people began. In Gujarat, the student movement against the attitude of the education minister erupted and the government itself collapsed. Later, in Bihar, a movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan against the state government started. At the same time, all railway workers, led by George Fernandez, went on strike. Indira Gandhi suppressed all these movements with iron hands. The railway workers involved in the strike were not only fired but also evacuated from their quarters. Everyone understood that Indira Gandhi was smart but she was very violent. Unexpectedly, both politics and history took a turn.
Raj Narain, who lost the 1971 elections to Indira Gandhi, filed a case in Allahabad Court alleging that she abused power and won. The trial court gave ruling on June 12, 1975. That is exactly 13 days before the start of the emergency. This may be the beginning of the idea of a decisive emergency. She was disqualified as an MP and her election as invalid. For the first time in history, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was cross-examined in a court. Indira Gandhi was shocked by this verdict and she went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme court upheld the verdict. That was on June 25, 1975. Even before the copy of the verdict order arrived, Jayaprakash Narayan organized a huge demonstration in Delhi and gave the slogan that the police should not listen to Indira and stand for justice. Indira Gandhi used the same slogan and took steps, sent the proposal to President Fakhruddin Ahmed and an emergency was imposed immediately. It changed everything.
During the Emergency, Indira Gandhi imprisoned all the political leaders who were against her. There were no rights .. no courts .. her words were orders. She suppressed all those who could cause damage to her with iron hands. Revolt starts when there is forceful detention. The Janata Party under the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan went to the people. Finally, in 1977, when the emergency was lifted and she went to the polls, Indira Gandhi lost badly. The Janata Party came to power. But the government fell with differences and groups. Indira Gandhi came to power again. This started the dictatorship of Indira Gandhi. She learnt how to harass the opponents using power without even doing it publicly.
The updated version is Narendra Modi and the only difference is he did not impose emergency. He grabs the MLAs of other parties without following any rule if there is no majority. The mandate of the people is ridiculed. This was done in states like Uttarakhand, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
They look at the cases on the regional party leaders to make them surrender. The leaders talk about one thing in the states and something other in Delhi. If you look at AP CM Jaganmohan Reddy and Telangana CM KCR, the matter can be easily understood. Now, Modi is having his say in Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya.
Earlier, Indira had to wage a war, Vajpayee had to do Kargil, but Modi required just a surgical strike. As nationalism rises so does Modi’s chest. The investigating agencies like CBI and ED are used against opponents. Indira used only police forces, but now CBI and ED are being deployed and police are there to help.
If there is a planning commission, the funds will go to all the states and if people are on their mercy there will be a political benefit. Hence NITI Aayog was formed. They are stopping Polavaram project and the BJP leaders are openly stating that they will complete the project if they are given the power. It is being alleged that the Modi government is harassing those farmers who are demanding a repeal of Farm Laws and also threatening the farm leaders of cases.
Even the judiciary seems to have gone into the same situation. Indira also interfered in appointment of judges and Modi is following the same now. If Indira Gandhi used emergency to control everything then, Narendra Modi is doing the same thing without imposing it. The mistakes made by other leaders are becoming weapons for them. After Indira, Narendra Modi is the next national leader.
