Senior Congress leader & Parliamentarian Ahmedbhai Mohammedbhai Patel, a close aide and political secretary of INC President Sonia Gandhi breathed his last at 3:30 AM on Wednesday at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. He was 71. The Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat had tested positive for Covid and was being treated for the same when his health condition worsened causing multiple organ failures.
Patel was born on 21 August 1949 in Bharuch, Gujarat, to Mohammed Ishikji Patel and Hawaben Mohammedbhai. He represented Gujarat for eight terms in the Indian Parliament, three times in the Lok Sabha (1977 – 1989) and five times in the Rajya Sabha (1993 – 2020). He also served as the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee.
The Congress President Sonia Gandhi expressed shock over Ahmed Patel’s death and termed the latter as an irreplaceable comrade, a faithful colleague and a friend. Congress’ Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi too condoled the death of Ahmed Patel saying that the latter lived and breathed for the party and had been with the Congress through thick and thin. While several leaders from various political parties too condemned the Congress stalwart’s demise.
Saddened by the demise of Ahmed Patel Ji. He spent years in public life, serving society. Known for his sharp mind, his role in strengthening the Congress Party would always be remembered. Spoke to his son Faisal and expressed condolences. May Ahmed Bhai’s soul rest in peace.
