Around nine crore farmers in India are set to benefit with the PM-Kisan scheme, as PM Modi on Friday, with the click of a button released ₹18,000 crores for beneficiaries, with ₹2000 instalment deposited into the bank account of every farmer. The PM released the amount on the occasion of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 96th birth anniversary which is observed as Good Governance Day yearly on the 25th of December. This assumes significance given the fact that the ongoing farmer protests against the contentious farm laws have turned a headache for the Centre.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammann Nidhi, a sum of ₹6000 is provided to all farmer families pan India every year, in three equal instalments of ₹2000 each. It is an initiative which is funded with 100% backing by the Government of India and was announced by Piyush Goyal in the 2019 Interim Union Budget. The scheme was implemented following the Telangana Government’s highly successful Rythu Bandhu scheme.
