Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap is not only known for his films but also controversies. This time, he teamed up with stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra and went to Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV office to present him with “Excellence in Journalism” award. This satirical feat consists of a photograph of a chappal with Arnab’s name written under it. Security personnel stopped them from entering into office. The duo posed for photographs outside the studio and published them on social media. But why are they angry on firebrand journalist Arnab?
Standup comedian Kunal Kamra and Arnab’s hostility goes long back. While Kunal is a vocal critic of right wing politics, Arnab is perceived to be close to BJP leadership. In fact, the principal investor in Republic TV is Rajeev Chandrasekhar who is a Rajya Sabha MP from BJP which makes the relationship between BJP and Republic TV conspicuous. Many anti-right wing activists like Kunal are at loggerheads with BJP and Republic TV and leave no opportunity to troll them. On January 28 of this year, Kunal was banned by IndiGo from flying with the airline for six months (later reduced to three months) for allegedly heckling Arnab.
Anurag Kashyap is an outspoken artist who calls a spade, spade. He is also active on Twitter, speaking out on various social and political issues. Anurag criticized Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for allowing the prosecution of JNU Student’s Union former president Kanhaiya Kumar who was charged with sedition back in 2016. We have to wait and see how Arnab Goswami responds to this.
