OTT platforms have become the saviours for film buffs by streaming movies of various regional languages. One such movie that is entertaining the film lovers now is ‘Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25’. This Malayalam film portrays the human emotions in a heart-touching manner. Parents would like their children to be with them in their old age. If it doesn’t happen, they start depending on others who live with them. The movie revolves around this factor.
Plot
Bhaskara Poduval is an old man who has lost his wife. He lives with his son Subramanian. Bhaskara tells his son to stay along with him due to his fear of dying alone. Meanwhile Subramanian gets a job in a Japanese company in Russia and he decides to go. Before leaving, he appoints a male nurse to serve his father. Subramanian befriends a Japanese girl in Russia and teaches her Malayalam. The male nurse appointed by him leaves his father. Subramanian returns to India with a humanoid robot to serve his father from abroad. This robot becomes handy to Bhaskara by assisting him in his daily activities. Bhaskara slowly starts loving it and names it ‘Kunjappan’. Finally he understands that machines don’t have emotions like humans.
Analysis
Machines may work faster than humans, but do not have emotions and thought process. Debutant director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval handled this point very well and filmed it with extreme clarity. Bhaskaran begins loving the robot and thinks his son left him due to greed. Ratheesh showcased his son Subramanian’s love for his father in a different angle. The film conveys that machine can’t spread love like humans. Suraj Venjaramoodu’s portrayal of ‘Bhaskara Poduval’ is outstanding while Soubin Shahir as his son ‘Subramanian’ is equally good.
Highlights
The concept of living with a humanoid robot in a remote village stands as the novel point in this film. Attaching a monitor to it and connecting the robot by the means of Bluetooth is entertaining. A scene in which the robot acts as a love messenger to Bhaskara generates humour. Climax is interestingly conceived on the point that robots will become a threat to humans in the future.
