Baba Ram Singh, a Sikh priest from a Haryana Gurudwara, who has been supporting the ongoing farmers’ protest which has been on since November, at the Delhi border against the Centre’s contentious farm laws, shot himself to death. The 65-yr old religious leader had joined the massive protests at Kundli near the Delhi-Sonipat border. Though Baba Ram Singh was rushed to a hospital by his followers, he was declared dead on arrival by doctors. The last rites of the Sikh leader will be held in Haryana’s Karnal on Friday.
“I feel the pain of farmers fighting to ensure their rights… I share their pain because the government is not doing justice to them. To inflict injustice is a sin, but it is also a sin to tolerate injustice. To support farmers, some have returned their awards to the government. I have decided to sacrifice myself,” Baba Ram Singh had mentioned in his suicide note, adding that he would like to express his pain and anger against the Centre.
Congress’ Rahul Gandhi expressed shock and condoled the death of Baba Ram Singh. The Gandhi scion also lashed out at the PM Modi led government for having crossed all limits of cruelty, and added that the Centre should stop being adamant and withdraw the anti-farmer bills.
