The Central Government announced Padma Awards for 119 people on the occasion of India’s Republic Day. Six others were conferred the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, as late singer and music composer SP Balasubramaniam was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan. While ten others were awarded the Padma Bhushan, 102 were awarded the Padma Shri. It is known that the Padma awards are conferred by the Indian President usually around March/ April every year in a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Among the awardees who received India’s highest civilian awards, four of them are from the Telugu states. While three of them are from AP, one is from Telangana.
SP Balasubramaniam from Tamil Nadu
Singing legend SP Balasubramaniam has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian Government for his outstanding services in the field of music and entertainment. Apart from SP Balu, Violin expert Annavarapu Rama Swamy from Vijayawada, Prakasarao Asavadi a litterateur from Anantapur, India’s first female percussionist (mridangam) Nidumolu Sumathi and Kanaka Raju in the field of art from Telangana.
