The SEC had issued a notification on November 17 for the conduct of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections on December 1 and results were declared on December 4. However, the SEC did not release the Gazette notification for swearing-in of the corporators. The Commission had earlier said that though the term of the body was till February 10, there are chances for the formation of a new body. However, the Commission issued Gazette notification for the newly elected Corporators.
The newly-elected BJP corporators had taken up protests for not releasing notification even after the declaration of the results. They took up protests at Ambedkar statue and also gave a memorandum but neither the Commission nor the government had responded to their demands. The BJP leaders lashed out at the government for their attitude. They alleged that the SEC was acting on the behest of the government. The newly-elected corporators lay seized the CM’s office Pragathi Bhavan over the delay information of a new body. They threatened to intensify their agitation if the government failed to respond immediately.
With the issuing of notification, decks have been cleared for the formation of the new body. With this, the newly elected corporators are now declared officially as corporators. The SEC had said that they cannot cancel the old body till the term of their tenure completes on February 10. The Commission has to issue another notification for the election of mayor and deputy mayor. The BJP leaders are threatening another agitation if the government fails to take up swearing-in of the corporators on February 10.
