India really put up a spirited fight in defying Australia on Day 5 of the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground having scored 334 having lost five wickets to draw the match. In the second innings, trailing by 309 runs, India lost skipper Ajinkya Rahane 4 (18) early with Wade taking a catch off Nathan Lyon delivery. While Rishabh Pant and Pujara defended India having slammed 97 and 77 runs respectively. Rohit Sharma scored 52, Shubman Gill 31, Hanuma Vihari 23 and Ravichandran Ashwin 39. At a particular stage, with Pant and Pujara at the crease it was clear that India would win the match, but with the two being dismissed the hopes faded. India and Australia are now levelled 1-1 in the series and the fourth Test will be played on January 15th at the Gabba in Brisbane.
“Our talk coming this morning was to show character and fight till the end. Not to think about the result. Really happy with the way we fought especially today but also throughout the game, even in the first innings when Australia were 200 for 2 and getting them all out for 338 was really good. There are few areas we can improve on but special mention to Vihari and Ashwin. The way they batted in the end and showed character was really good to see. Credit to him (Pant). We made that strategy but in the end, it is all about the player executing the plan” Captain Ajinkya Rahane said.
