Efforts by the Indian government to extradite London-based diamond trader Nirav Modi, the prime accused in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank consortium scam, are likely to bear fruit. However, Nirav Modi, who is refusing to come to India, has two last chances. If those chances are met, the British government will extradite Nirav Modi to India.
Before the FIR was registered by CBI
Nirav Modi fled to Britain before the CBI registered an FIR in the Punjab Nation Bank fraud case. With this, the CBI, ED and foreign departments have been trying to bring water to India for almost three years. The Home Ministry has rejected the petitions filed by Nirav Modi, who is absconding on the grounds that Covid was mentally ill and mentally ill. At the same time, it gave him a chance. He was given 14 days to appeal against the Home Ministry’s decision in the High Court there. It seems that he has recently filed his request in the High Court.
This is the case
Punjab National Bank (PNB) officials have lodged a complaint with the CBI against Pearls (pearls), diamond trader Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and others for misusing Letters of Undertaking (LOO) issued to their clients to obtain loans from their bank branches and subsidiary banks abroad. Complaints were received about the non-payment of loans. There have also been allegations that loans have been misappropriated and diverted to Hong Kong and Dubai banks. The CBI and ED registered a case against Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and others on January 31, 2018. However, he fled India on January 18. The CBI had filed a charge sheet on May 14 naming 25 people as accused in the case and in December 2019, the CBI filed a second charge sheet in the court. Nirav Modi, who fled abroad, was arrested in London in 2019 following the issuance of an Interpol red corner notice.

Attempts to escape
India demands the extradition of Nirav Modi in London as part of an extradition treaty. In this order, Nirav Modi also made a lot of efforts to avoid coming to India. Also tried for bail. However, the petitions were dismissed by a division bench of Westminster Magistrates’ Court and the London High Court. Nirav Modi was lodged in Wandsworth Jail after his arrest. Later, the Covid issue was brought to the fore, allegations of human rights violations in India, mental health was not good, and prison facilities were another reason. In this context, the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on February 25 made key remarks on Nirav Modi’s petition. The bail petition was filed on the ground that there was no evidence that the cases registered against Nirav could not be investigated impartially in India. At the same time, the CBI had to give an assurance in court on behalf of the EDs. Nirav said Modi would be transferred from Wandsworth Jail to Barrack No. 12 in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai and had to report on the jail arrangements. About two months later, the UK Home Ministry investigated the CBI request and revealed that Nirav Modi is extradited to India.
Will go up to the Supreme Court
However, there are reports that arrangements are being made to bring Nirav Modi to India. The court also allowed Nirav Modi to go to the high court. It is also likely to appeal to the Supreme Court over the High Court decision. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
