Tamil film industry initiated the #SaveCinema campaign on social media advocating the opening of theatres, resuming shoots and reviving normalcy in the film industry. Now, Tollywood has also joined it as cine workers from Krishna Nagar in Hyderabad are suffering a lot due to the closure. Many of them have gone back to their villages as they are unable to survive due to unavailability of work across 24 crafts.
When will theatres reopen?
Every one of us used to go to theatres as they served as venues of entertainment for common people. Gone are the days when we waited for new movies and went to multiplexes with our families. Most of us even forgot ‘Book my show’. It’s already been six months since the theatres got closed and the workers in cinema halls are facing miserable conditions, in many cases, unable to buy basic groceries as well. In order to restore their normal lives, there is no other option other than reopening theatres and running projectors.
Where are the stars?
It seems that our stars have forgotten their industry people and are confining to their kitchens and planting saplings. COVID has become the reason for the closure of 1600 theatres, destroying the livelihood of 80 thousand cine workers and crushing the lives of 20 lakh people who are directly or indirectly dependent on Cinema. #SaveCinema campaign is aiming to revive the lost hope in the industry right now.
Multiplex Association of India has also started a campaign named #SupportMovieTheatres all across the nation through various social media handles. As Tamil film industry has already come together to support the cause, it’s now the turn of Tollywood stars to come forward and lobby for the opening of theatres. As the government has given permissions to open malls and resume air and metro travel in Unlock 4.0, it will be unfair to not open theatres as the lives of lakhs of people are dependent on them.
