Elections are going to be held soon for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), No doubt, these are crucial elections taken prestigiously by all political parties, mainly the ruling TRS. Parties are already engaged in discussions over the possible alliances and adjustments in the polls. It has been assumed that TRS and AIMIM will contest the polls in alliance or at least enter into a secret understanding, given the bonhomie between the two parties as seen for the last 6 years.
But the latest developments are suggesting that things will be different between the two partners this time. BJP has been accusing the TRS of rubbing shoulders with the Majlis and Asaduddin Owaisi and acting on its instructions on many issues. However, the spat between the two parties in Assembly appears to disprove these allegations. MIM’s Akbaruddin Owaisi launched a scathing attack on the TRS government for failing to tackle coronavirus effectively. These outbursts by a member of a ‘friendly’ party stunned the ruling party MLAs, including the Chief Minister. The attack from Akbar comes especially when the TRS is expecting support from MIM in the wake of expected criticism from opposition Congress.
KCR miffed
Sources say Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao was really miffed by the attack of Akbaruddin Owaisi on the government over mishandling of Covid-19. He even reportedly said to his son KT Rama Rao in Assembly whether MIM is a friendly party or a rival to TRS. “MIM is a dominant political force in Old City. How come the party is turning against us ahead of GHMC elections?” KCR is said to have said to a few members who met him in his chamber in Assembly.
Parting ways?
Analysts see Akbaruddin’s criticism of the government a precursor to parting of ways between the two parties. It suggests that MIM is preparing to go it alone in the GHMC elections. The party is aiming for the mayor’s post as it feels it can get some seats outside its bastion of Old City. If this is true, it is certain to turn GHMC elections more exciting.
