While Sushant Singh Rajput’s death has reignited the nepotism debate in B-town, there are several other aspects which come on board post this including trials for star kids in the film industry. The Twitter court of law has now launched a new social media drive to demand a CBI enquiry for actress Sridevi, who died in a hotel room in Dubai back in February, 2018. As #CBIEnquiryForSridevi trends on Twitter, the larger question remains whether this online activism is a positive force at all?
Since Sridevi’s death was ruled as ‘accidental drowning’, users are raising questions about her demise. The English Vinglish actress passed away in the hotel room of the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel on 24th February 2018, after attending the wedding of her nephew, Mohit Marwaha.
Actress Janhvi Kapoor, who had earlier faced the wrath of armchair activists following her mother’s demise, recently opened up about the media uproar over Sushant’s death. “I think when you are an actor and when you have done the kind of work my mom has done, Sushant has done, the way he touched people’s lives. Especially in the case of Indian audiences, I feel there is a sense of ownership for actors. They really own you. The way they love you in this country I don’t think that any actor in any other country gets that kind of love. So I understand that the feeling of loss is very personal,” she shared in an interview.
She further added, “People react differently. I personally don’t think anything comes out of negativity, aggression, and speculations. In fact, more often than not it is hurtful. But you just have to keep on believing that what is right will prevail.”
While it can be argued that social media has been a positive instrument for the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case, there are points to keep in mind regarding such legal procedures.
Primarily, everything is hearsay unless proven in a court of law. However, this ethical decorum is hardly maintained in such big celebrity cases. The trial by media, which has become a part of Sushant’s case, not only leads to character assassinations but also encourages the mixing of public sentiments with the law, which is not a good outcome for any party. While Sridevi’s case was never investigated like that of Sushant’s, it is very difficult to demand a CBI enquiry simply based on the sentiments of people.
