Disha Ravi’s arrest from Bengaluru by the police for having shared a toolkit which was tweeted by Greta Thunberg led to huge outrage. It is known that the Swedish climate activist lent her support to the ongoing farmer’s protest in Delhi and had tweeted a toolkit on the same. This led to a huge backlash in India with the Indian Government making it clear that an international conspiracy is being plotted to malign India on a global level. The Delhi Police even stated that they would investigate the matter, adding that a Khalistani group is responsible for the developments. Now, according to the police they suspect the 22-yr old activist Disha to be behind the toolkit and that she has been doing it to revive the Sikh separatist outfit.
“I did not make Toolkit. We wanted to support the farmers. I edited two lines on February 3,” Disha said in a Delhi Court. Sadly, she was not even provided legal support.
“Deeply disappointed by the conduct of the duty magistrate…who remanded a young woman to five days in police custody, without first ensuring that she was being represented by counsel. Magistrates must take their duties of remand seriously and ensure that the mandate of Article 22 of the constitution is scrupulously followed,” Rebecca John, a senior advocate said.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged against another lawyer activist Nikita Jacob and Shantanu in connection with the toolkit tweet by Great Thunberg. The development comes following Disha Ravi being sent to five-day custody to the Delhi Special Police Cell. However, the opposition and student associations in Bengaluru have jumped in support of Disha Ravi demanding her release.
