The need for non-Hindus to sign a declaration at Tirumala temple is being questioned and debated now. The real question should be what is the need to raise a huge and cry over the tradition that has been in vogue for decades. It looks like even though Jagan Mohan Reddy is willing to sign the declaration, his party leaders and the TTD chairman might not allow him to do so. It is believed that party leaders are vocal in opposing the tradition because it reflects the opinion of their leader.
Why is Jagan unwilling to sign?
The declaration rule has been in force at Tirumala temple for many years. As per Act 30 of 1987 and Rule No.136 and 137 of the TTD’s general rules, individuals of other religions should sign this declaration before entering the temple. These rules were being implemented through GO MS No 311 of 1990.
What will be there in this declaration form?

Besides general information columns like name, address, mobile number and identity proof, this form has the following main section:
I … …. … .. .. … belong to .. .. … .. .. .. .. (religion) however I have faith in Lord Venkateswara and reverence to him and to his worship.
I may be permitted to enter the temple and have darshan of the Lord.
The entrant should fill the form and sign under it. The key part is declaration of faith in Lord Venkateswara, which should be signed by any person who is not a practicing Hindu. It is a mere formality since any person who comes thus far, does so, as he believes in the Lord. The only thing they have to do is mention their own religion.
What is the objection?
One should have no problem in signing this declaration saying that he / she believes in the deity and worships him. But the need to mention their own religion seems to be the main problem in YS Jagan’s case. He doesn’t seem to be willing to openly claim that he belongs to a particular religion. Does it not look like he feels offended to mention his religion as ‘Christianity”? What impression will it create amongst people is to be seen?
Leaders can take appropriate decisions when they have clarity on the message their actions send to people.
