The Malla Reddy College of Engineering in Kompally and Dhanekula Institute of Engineering & Technology in Vijayawada have been blacklisted and banned for a five-year term by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This comes as a big blow for the ruling TRS government as the MRCE is run by the Malla Reddy Group of Institutions, and the founder-chairman is Medchal MLA Ch Malla Reddy who is also the Labour Minister of Telangana. The NAAC has rejected the Self Study Report submitted by MRCE as it found that the certificates submitted by the institution were not genuine. It is reported that BHEL, Yash Technologies and Airtel had issued the certificates to those students who had done their internship.
“The NAAC accreditation will not affect the existing students but will impact admissions. Students might not prefer to take admission in a college that is blacklisted and not accredited. Since it is a private college, they do not have to bother about the UGC funding, which is based on the NAAC ranking. However, since it has been blacklisted for five years, it is likely to intervene with the implementation of the New Education Policy,” a UGC official said.
The NAAC had graded MRCE with B++ in July 2018 and its valid till 2023, however following the confirmation of digital fabrication in certificates with respect to the seal, signature and letterhead, a show cause was issued in November 2019. The decision taken by the NAAC has been informed to the principals of Malla Reddy College of Engineering and the Dhanekula Institute of Engineering & Technology in Vijayawada.
It is known that the Telangana Labour Minister Malla Reddy and his son Bhadra Reddy were involved in an alleged land grabbing case at Suraram Village and the minister was booked under Section 447 (criminal trespass) and 506 (criminal intimidation) by the police. Ponnaboina Shyamala Devi who owns 2.13 acres of land had filed the complaint against Malla Reddy and his son.
