Sushil Chandra has been appointed as Chief Election Commissioner of India, succeeding Sunil Arora, the current Chief Election Commissioner, as the latter’s tenure ended on April 12. That tradition has been going on for years. Sushil Chandra, who is the senior amongst the current commissioners, will have a chance in this order. Sushil Chandra will take over on April 13. Sushil Chandra’s term is until May 14, 2022, next year.
The second officer from IRS
Sushil Chandra, an IRS officer of the 1980 batch. He became the second person from the IRS to become the Chief Commissioner of Elections in India. TS Krishna Murthy, former Chief Commissioner of Elections of India from February 8, 2004, to May 15, 2005, is an IRS officer. As for Sushil Chandra, he has completed B Tech in IIT Roorkee. He also graduated in law from Dehradun DAV College. After completing his education, he joined the Indian Engineering Services. He was later selected for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1980. After training, he served in several states. He has played a key role in the Income Tax Department in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Delhi and Mumbai. In addition to serving as the Commissioner (Appeals) of the Income Tax Department, he has been the Director of Investigation at the headquarters and the Director-General of Investigation in Gujarat. Also trained in several countries.
As the Election Commissioner of India in 2019
In 2016, he was appointed Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (Board of Direct Taxes). While in office, orders were issued appointing him as the Election Commissioner of India in 2019. Sushil Chandra, who has served in the Indian Revenue Service for 38 years, is said to have been instrumental in extracting black money, resolving disputes, collecting taxes from tax evaders and increasing the number of taxpayers in the country by almost 24 times. They are said to have been involved in activities such as sharing the list of tax evaders among various countries, giving key instructions in the formulation of laws to curb benami, and introducing the process of issuance of automated notices in the Income Tax Department. Then played a major role in the demonetization brought about by the centre.
Elections in five states
Sushil Chandra will be the Chief Election Commissioner till May 14, 2022. Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls under the leadership of Sushil Chandra. Interestingly, the new government in UP will have formed by May 14.
