The YSRCP led government mulls constructing a church using taxpayers’ money. Well, we cannot recall any such instances like these by the previous governments. The Panchayat Raj engineering wing has called tenders for constructing a church. The tenders have been called for the construction of Christian Brethren Trust Church at Rompicherla mandal in Guntur district and is estimated to cost Rs 8.72 lakh. As per the tender, the church construction is to be completed within a month.
It is very rare that churches are built using government funds. Temples are constructed with the funding of the devotees and also with the support of big organisations like TTD. Even the mosques are also constructed with the support of funds from devotees. However, it is not sure why the government is taking interest in constructing a church.
The government, in the name of welfare to minorities, is taking up the construction of churches. However, it is not clear whether welfare means promoting religions or uplifting the poor? The minority welfare schemes are brought to ensure that smaller sections do not face exploitation in society and provide benefits to them, but it is not the duty of the government to construct churches and mosques.
Few are stating that by constructing churches, the government itself is promoting the spread of religion. It is strange that the government is getting ready to construct churches. It is not known whether the government will construct a mosque also using the minority welfare funds. The government’s decisions are raising several eyebrows.
