Look like the YSRCP is frightened regarding the proposal of local body elections, as it has refused to attend the all-party meeting called by the State Election Commission. The EC is contemplating to take the opinion of political parties in writing if needed and hand it over to the Court. On the other hand, the High Court has made key remarks on the local body elections.
The court, which heard the petition filed by the State Election Commissioner, directed the SEC to file an affidavit on the allegations that the government was not cooperating in the conduct of the elections. The Court had objected to the comments of the government that EC should consult the government on conducting elections. The court questioned whether a constitutional body should come and seek permission from the government. It wanted the SEC to mention in the affidavit on which issues the government was not supporting.
The State Election Commission had postponed the elections during the lockdown using its discretionary powers. Following, EC’s move there were many developments in the state, which included reducing the SEC’s tenure and appointing another Commissioner in his place.
However, the situation has now changed with the Centre having begun the unlock process in the country. Right from liquor shops to restaurants, cinema theatres, parks and even schools will be opening from next month. Elections are also being held in many places in the country.
Government says no chance
While the entire country is in one direction, the YSRCP government is in another direction. The government states that since Corona reinfection chances are high, the elections cannot be held. However, contrary to its claims the state government has allowed all business activities in the state, with classes for ninth and tenth ongoing and the primary schools set to open from next month. So, why Corona reinfection fear only among voters?
Severe opposition against Govt
The government has been facing opposition on every issue and if it goes for the elections in these circumstances, the party will have to face defeat. At the same time, the party has apprehensions that the Election Commission would not support them. Hence the party does not want to hear about the local body elections.
